What Is High Tech Composite Filling?

Treating cavities requires the dentist near you to remove the decayed part of the tooth and then fill the area where the decayed substance was removed. Fillings can also be used to treat worn-out, broken, or cracked teeth.

Types of Filling Materials

At Family Dentistry and Dental Specialists Group, we have several composite fillings in Orlando available for your use. Factors that may determine the kind of filling we will use are; extent and location of the decay, the cost of filling material against your insurance coverage, and your dentist's recommendation. The dental fillings include:

1. Cast Gold Fillings

Advantages

  • They are durable. Usually, they last up to 10 to 15 years and even more.
  • They are strong and can withstand chewing stress.
  • They are beautiful and very aesthetically pleasing.

Disadvantages

  • It costs about 10 times more than the cost of silver amalgam fillings.
  • It requires at least two office visits to complete them.
  • Some patients prefer fillings that match the rest of the teeth.

2. Silver Fillings (Amalgams)

Advantages

  • They are durable and can last for about 10 to 15 years
  • They are strong and can withstand chewing forces.
  • They might be less expensive than composite fillings

Disadvantages

  • They don't match the color of the natural teeth and can even cause a grayish hue to the tooth around.
  • Healthy parts of the tooth are often removed to make space for the amalgam filling due to its large nature.

3. Tooth-colored Composites

Advantages

  • The color matches the existing teeth.
  • They micro-mechanically bond to the structure, thus providing additional support.
  • They are versatile and can be used to repair worn, broken, or chipped teeth.
  • Requires less tooth structure to be removed compared to other fillings.

Disadvantages

  • They are not durable, and may not last under the pressure of chewing. Especially if used for large cavities.
  • They take longer to complete and require additional visits
  • Depending on the location, they can chip off the tooth.
  • They can cost twice as much amalgam fillings.

Other tooth-colored fillings that we have are; ceramics and glass Ionomer.

Ceramics:

They are mostly made of porcelain and can resist staining more than composite resin material. They last way more than 15 years but cost just as much as gold.

Glass Ionomer:

They are made from acrylic and a specific type of glass material. It is mostly used to fill below the gum line. Furthermore, glass ionomers release fluoride to preserve the tooth from further decay. However, the material is not so strong and is susceptible to fracture. Its duration is only about five years or less.

Are They Covered By Dental Insurance?

The cost of composite filling is usually covered up to the point of the silver filling, from there the patient might have to pay for their filling.

Caring For The Teeth With Fillings

Follow proper oral hygiene by visiting your dentist regularly for cleanings. Use fluoride toothpaste to brush and always floss with an antibacterial mouthwash.
